Nursery habitat use by juvenile blue crabs in created and natural fringing marshes

چکیده
Climate change and coastal development pressures have intensified the need for shoreline protection. Nature-first approaches that use natural habitats, particularly marshes, are being promoted globally as ecologically-beneficial alternatives to grey infrastructure. The ability of these novel shorelines provide nursery habitat blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), an ecologically economically important species along Atlantic Gulf coasts United States, has not been fully evaluated. We quantified abundance size distribution juvenile crabs from a chronosequence living (created fringing marshes) spanning 2 16 years in age since construction compared with paired marshes southern Chesapeake Bay. Both created used by primary habitats. Despite interannual differences abundance, young (? 2.5 cm carapace width) were observed similar densities sizes at marshes. was related density, indicating even youngest (2 years) provided habitat. potential serve may additional incentive implement nature-based climate adaptation.

Mechanisms Explaining Nursery Habitat Association: How Do Juvenile Snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) Benefit from Their Nursery Habitat?
Nursery habitats provide elevated survival and growth to the organisms that associate with them, and as such are a crucial early life-stage component for many fishes and invertebrates. The exact mechanisms by which these benefits are afforded to associated organisms, however, are often unclear. Here we assessed potential explanations of the nursery function of structurally complex habitats for ...
متن کاملPopulation density, survival and movement of blue crabs in estuarine salt marsh nurseries
The importance of a broad suite of complex structured habitats as nurseries for estuarine fauna is well recognized. In contrast, recent evidence indicates the nursery value of salt marshes and contiguous unvegetated mud flats for blue crabs are underestimated. To assess the nursery value of salt marsh tidal creeks for the blue crab Callinectes sapidus in coastal North Carolina, USA, we quantifi...

Blue crabs Callinectes sapidus (Rathbun, 1896) > 100 mm carapace width were sampled from a constructed oyster reef (1996 and 1997), a sand bar (1997) and a natural oyster bar (1997) in the piankatank River, Chesapeake Bay, USA to describe habitat use, sex ratios, and demographics across a gradient of habitat types. patterns of blue crab catch-per-unit-effort (CpUE), and demographics were simila...
متن کاملMovement patterns and nursery habitat of juvenile thresher sharks Alopias vulpinus in the Southern California Bight
We investigated the potential use of open coastal habitat over the continental shelf as a nursery area for the common thresher shark Alopias vulpinus. Seven juvenile threshers were tracked using acoustic telemetry to determine their movement patterns and nursery habitat in the Southern California Bight (SCB). Tracked sharks occupied waters over the continental shelf 87% of the time. These water...
متن کاملEffects of Predator Foraging Behavior on Patterns of Prey Mortality in Marine Soft Bottoms
This study links spatial and seasonal patterns of mortality of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria (L.), in marine soft bottoms with the predation rates and habitat use of its main predator, the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun. Patterns of predation on tethered juvenile clams exposed to the natural assemblage of predators were compared among different habitat types in fall and summer. B...
